Natural History of the Patagonia Cordillera: Argentina and Chile

Our group of Patagonian explorers are about to embark on their final backpack trip, a 15-day excursion from Cochamó, Chile.

They will trek from a coastal fjord to the continental divide, through mature Valdivian rainforest and forests of higher elevation Fitzroya cupressoides (“alerce”—similar to giant redwoods). During this leg of the journey, the students will be resupplied by packhorses!

Natural History of the Patagonia Cordillera: Argentina and Chile

Since the beginning of January, a group of Sierra Institute students and their instructor, Brett Lovelace, have been exploring the mountains, valleys, and plateau of the Eastern Andean Cordillera in Argentina.

Fresh off a 22-day backpacking trip, they will cross the border into Chile and soon begin another 8-day backpacking trip to El Cañi Reserve, a mature Araucaria araucana (“monkey puzzle tree”) forest, with a possible ascent of nearby Volcan Villarica to see an active volcano!

The group is currently staying in a village called Junín de los Andes in the province of Neuquén, Argentina, a place famous for its birdwatching and trout-fishing.
